Why are crack control joints required?

Crack control joints are recommended by British Standards and are cut in at regular intervals. They are cut to a depth of 25% of the slab. If a crack should occur, it would follow the direction of the weakened points so that the crack never becomes visible, and the crack control joint itself is filled with mastic.
